MÉTA-LINGUA

Méta-lingua arose from the desire to create a playful object about language wealth.

Today, 90% of people living in France speak French. However, no one does it similarly. The background, region or generation we are from, the environment we are living in change the way we talk – Our words, our accent, our gesture.

But nothing is frozen. Over our moving, our meetings and exchanges, our langage changes endlessly.

This book is one of a kind. Through the magic of folds and unfolds, it takes shape in space and invites to an unfolded reading.
Over the pages, the reader will get involved into a cacophonous journey that shows the language’s intensity.

Once unfolded, the book contains 7 booklets built symmetrically: All the booklets can be read from left to right or right to left, and bottom to top or top to bottom. Each side actually begins with the same story. However, the story has been told in 6 different ways, by 6 people from different areas – 6 different languages.

Over the pages, the reader will get involved into a cacophonous journey that shows the language’s intensity. While some letters and words disappear on one side, they appear suddenly on the other side.

In the middle of each booklet, the two face to face stories / languages finally meet and create an hybrid, a bastard language.

To complete the book, this website is a collaborative platform that sets up linguistic databases – videos and audio recording, produced and offered by people of all backgrounds, areas and generations.

Méta-lingua: folded, unfolded.
